Google India | International Mother Language Day

India speaks 780 unique languages, and according to a 2018 report, at least 52% of India’s urban youth are fluent in at least two. This number is on the rise year-on-year. According to Duolingo’s 2023 survey, half of urban India learnt a new language in the past two years. We celebrated this steady rise in multilingualism on International Mother Language Day, by encouraging people to search words in newer languages. We used cultural markers like food, clothes, and popular media icons to open up the wild and wonderful world of new languages. And through evocative, typography-first illustrations, we brought alive the pride of every local speaker, and every non-local attempting to speak India’s myriad languages.

We democratised the internet and celebrated linguistic plurality, all while generating advocacy and local, cultural relevance for Google’s multilingual products.
